A SMALL VICTORY FOR THOSE

WORKING TO BOYCOTT HORSE RACING

Congrats to all who have been working so diligently to get the word out that horse racing is a spectacle of abuse, not a sport.  Schools in parts of Australia keeping the promoting of horse racing out of schools is a small victory, but it’s a victory!

March 1st, 2022

The following quotes are from an article by Damien Ractliffe of The Sydney Morning Herald titled…

RACING BOSS SAYS ‘WOKE’ PARENTS

KEEPING THE SPORT OUT OF SCHOOLS

“In announcing record half-yearly turnover figures from July 1 – December 30, 2021 on Tuesday, Thompson said he was confident racing had engaged the “20-somethings and 30-somethings” who were filling racetracks and punting on the sport.”

Okay, you’re right, record setting  numbers and attracting more 20 and 30 year olds to the track is not a good sign.  It’s downright disheartening.

BUT Giles Thompson…

“admitted the industry had little luck trying to get into schools to promote all things good about racing, saying 95 per cent of schools had knocked back Racing Victoria initiatives, such as free educational incursions in schools, visits from horses or jockeys and excursions to racetracks.”

Ninety-five per cent of schools would say, ‘we’re not interested,’ and you’d say, ‘why not?’ and they’d say, ‘the parents won’t put up with it’.”

He goes on to say…

“It’s ‘wokeism’ if you like, of, it only takes one parent to kibosh it when 50 parents might be pro it.”

If you ever wonder if when you advocate for horses or other animls if you’re being heard, perhaps that is the perfect example of how individuals can make a HUGE difference.  Thank you to all who speak up.

“But Thompson said racing’s challenge when it came to engaging children wasn’t just gambling-related.

If you think about what puts a school off racing, it’s the gambling, it’s the breakdowns of horses – horses breaking down in the Melbourne Cup is tragic for us in that environment – and it’s how we’re perceived,” he said.”

Surely he is NOT surprised by that?  After all that’s the reality.  Gambling is of course addictive, in some cases ruins lives and destroys families, AND horses have not only broken down but died during the Melbourne Cup.

He thinks it’s tragic for the racing industry?   What about the 7  horses in 8 Melbourne Cups who died for this so called sport?

AND that’s not counting all the other racehorses who die in other races and at other  tracks or those who are slaughtered annually in Australia for dog food and for human consumption.

“I’ve been royally criticised over recent years over the whip debate. And it’s a great example of how, on the one hand, racing wants to engage with a younger generation and a younger demographic, and it’s about perception of the sport, when it’s that demographic – the 12-year-old – who doesn’t understand why a horse has to be whipped in a race, who doesn’t understand that the whip is padded and doesn’t hurt. It’s the perception of it.”

Of course we’re not surprised by this callous attitude from an industry that considers horses ‘wastage’.

Any one who has spent any time around any horse knows that a horse can feel a fly when it lands on his or her skin, and horses will flinch when  a fly lands.

How is it possible that horses, with such sensitive skin do not hurt when whipped in the face?

We’d love to see Giles Thompson take a whip in the face and prove to us it doesn’t hurt.

CARO MELDRUM-HANNA, REPORTER: On a still winter’s night in Caboolture, Queensland, undercover cameras record a group of horses gated inside a series of holding pens. This is not a safe place for these animals. Recent injuries are noticeable – an ominous sign this is a place of violence. Brandings burnt into their hides reveal these aren’t just any horses. They’re registered thoroughbred racehorses. Night after night, more and more appear, and according to the racing industry’s own policies and rules, they should not be ending up here. CARO MELDRUM-HANNA: Australian horse racing is a billion-dollar industry and growing. Big business, big government revenue, and big prize money requires big breeding with the industry producing more than 14,000 foals last financial year.
