RECOMMENDED READINGS AND FILMS ON THE HORSE SLAUGHTER INDUSTRY

The Final Race

The 7.30 Report aired The Final Race in October 2019.

One Year On

In October 2019 ABC's 7:30 program highlighted the routine slaughter of racehorses once they are disposed of, creating shockwaves across Australia and the world.

Their brutal retirement plan for horses had finally been exposed. However, 7:30 did not cover the full story - the routine abuse of horses during racing.

Through this short film, we will expose the reality of the day to day life of a horse used for racing, we will go deeper into the horrors of the slaughter investigation and take a look, one year on, at where things stand for them now.

Read the detailed report on Australian racehorse slaughter and take the pledge to never bet on or attend a horse race again…

Victims of the Betting Industry

Swiss NGO Tierschutzbund Zurich did an investigation of Australian horse meat production in 2020.

They have produced a film and a report to the EU Commissioner detailing the cruelty and food safety issues that are systemic in Australia.

End of Life Options

End-of-life Options and the Problems with Horse Slaughter

– Dr Andrea Harvey

This article focuses on what the end-of-life options are for horses, and the advantages and disadvantages of these options. It further discusses some of the welfare problems associated with slaughter and how some of these could be addressed.

The Martin Inquiry

The Queensland Government conducted an independent inquiry into the management of retired racehorses, including the regulatory and oversight arrangements for abattoirs and knackeries and the transport of horses to those facilities.

The inquiry followed the ABC’s October 2019 7.30 story about the ‘wastage’ of retired racehorses, and raised issues about the treatment of horses at a Queensland abattoir.

Retired District Court Judge Terry Martin SC led the inquiry with the support of equine veterinary surgeon Dr Peter Reid. Both Mr Martin and Dr Reid have extensive experience in their respective fields and brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the inquiry.

Echuca Auction

Auction day at Echuca, where horse racing’s also-rans await their fate.

“As the auctioneer comes around, a volunteer reads out the horses’ details to the crowd of bidders. They sell quickly and for not very much. A few weeks ago they were part of the $18bn Australian racing industry. Now, unless the bidding goes high enough, they could be headed to an abattoir.”

Phenylbutazone a public health risk.

"Phenylbutazone (PBZ) is the most commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) in equine practice.

Thoroughbred (TB) race horses like other horse breeds are slaughtered for human consumption.

Phenylbutazone is banned for use in any animal intended for human consumption because it causes serious and lethal idiosyncratic adverse effects in humans.

The number of horses that have received phenylbutazone prior to being sent to slaughter for human consumption is unknown but its presence in some is highly likely."

"Phenylbutazone (PBZ) was marketed in the United States for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and gout in 1952. Serious and often fatal adverse effects such as aplastic anemia and agranulocytosis appeared in the literature within three years of its use."

"The serious adverse effects of PBZ culminated in its unavailability for human use in the United States."

"Because of the bone marrow toxicity caused by PBZ in humans, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has set no safe levels of PBZ in animals intended for food and bans the administration of this drug in any horse sent to slaughter for human consumption."

"Thoroughbred race horses may have a higher rate of PBZ exposure because of their intense training and racing schedule. Thoroughbred race horses frequently develop training- or race-related musculoskeletal injuries that require treatment with a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID). Phenylbutazone is the most widely used NSAID in horses because of its availability and cost."
