WHY THE NAME “MEET OUR HORSE MEAT”?

Yes, the name Meet Our Horse Meat is confronting.

That’s the point.

We’re NOT here to promote horse meat.

We’re here to expose it — and the industries that profit from it.

Meet Our Horse Meat began with a clear goal: to end the slaughter of horses in Australia, in all its forms — whether for human consumption, pet food, or the greyhound racing industry.

But as we dug deeper, we uncovered something even more disturbing: the tight, often hidden link between horse slaughter and the horse racing industry itself.

As we continued to dig we realised horse racing is not a sport but rather a spectacle of abuse.

What started as a fight against the export of horse meat has become a broader mission to confront the systemic cruelty that leads so many horses — into the slaughter pipeline.

These aren’t horses bred for meat. Horses slaughtered in Australia include: racehorses the industry cruelly refers to as “wastage”, show horses, former pets, riding school horses, rodeo ‘stock’ and Brumbies — discarded when no longer considered profitable or useful.

HORSEMEAT IS TOXIC

Until recently, thousands of pounds of toxic horse meat were exported from Australia every year, landing on plates overseas — often in the European Union — without consumers knowing the truth. While that export has paused, the killing hasn’t.

The cruel and barbaric slaughtering of horses is still legal in Australia.

Across Australia, over 30 knackeries are still actively slaughtering horses for pet food — often to feed greyhounds in yet another exploitative industry — and don’t get us started on the recent government sanctioned inhumane massacre of Brumbies in the Kosciuszko National Park, NSW.

HORSE SLAUGHTER IS NOT HUMANE

Australians are rightly horrified by the idea of eating cats or dogs — yet we allow something just as cruel to happen to horses, right here at home.

Where do we draw the line?

We’ve witnessed horses hauled for 30 hours straight — no breaks, no food, not a drop of water. We’ve seen them trapped in metal trailers on scorching days, the sun blazing down, their bodies overheating, their eyes wide with fear.

When the journey ends, the cruelty doesn’t. Horses are herded off the trucks, confused and terrified, pushed into holding yards where they wait — not for care or comfort, but for a brutal death.

This is NOT humane. This is NOT humane euthanasia.  This is NOT acceptable.

At Meet Our Horse Meat, we exist to expose this hidden cruelty, break through the silence, and fight for every horse — domestic or Brumby — whose life is treated as disposable by industries that put profit above welfare.

No horse should suffer for convenience, money, or sport.

We must end the commercial slaughter of horses in Australia — and that starts with truth and accountability.

Slaughterhouses claim to follow humane practices. But horses, like cattle, require powerful tools to ensure a swift, unconscious death.

Footage from the ABC’s 7.30 report The Final Race shows this isn’t the reality.

At Meramist abattoir, the penetrative captive bolt gun failed to consistently render horses unconscious — leaving some strung up by one hoof, still alive as their throats were slit.

This is not a one-off. It is part of a broken system.

Join us. Speak out. Share the truth.

Together, we can end horse slaughter in Australia — for good.

SEE FOR YOURSELF…

Undercover investigations in Australia have shown the horrendous animal welfare conditions in the EU-approved Meramist slaughterhouse. We know this 2-minute video is hard to watch but we’re hoping that not everyone will turn away.

They’re about to be killed. Isn’t that bad enough? Can’t they be given a bit of dignity?

Young or old.  Pregnant mares.  Horses who have won $100K or more.  The slaughter industry does not discriminate.

The majority of horses slaughtered in Australia had positive interactions with people and developed an understanding of humans as care givers and providers.

The majority sought help from fear and pain from humans, and now at their demise, they realize that these humans do not care about them and are about to kill them. Try as they might, there is no escape.

We need to see this brutality come to an end!

ABC NEWS 7.30:  THE DARK SIDE OF THE RACING INDUSTRY – THE RESULTS OF A 2 YEAR INVESTIGATION

I think they [the Australian racing industry] are purposely hiding this from the general public because if they were to know I don’t think we would be getting 100,000 people going to the Melbourne Cup.

We’re talking about destroying [slaughtering] horses on an industrial level.

This is the sort of material that will shake the [Australian horse racing] industry to the core.

One unidentified horse reportedly required five bolts, and many others can be seen kicking and ‘galloping’ on the grate, creating serious animal welfare issues and dangerous conditions for the workers.

Whistleblowers are invited to contact MOHM regarding violations occurring during horse slaughter or transport to slaughter.

Are you a slaughterhouse or ex-slaughterhouse employee, a transport driver or a feedlot operator with knowledge of animal abuse, or other violations?

Are you a track veterinarian, groom, jockey or trainer who has evidence of horses “run” on phenylbutazone or other drugs, and then being shipped to slaughter?

Do you have pictures/video of horses in transit to slaughter?

Anonymity guaranteed!
