“HORSES DISCARDED & TREATED LIKE SCRAP”

WED., June 2024:  RTÉ Investigates recently went deep inside the equine industry to show what happens to horses after they leave the spotlight.

RTÉ INVESTIGATES & EXPOSES ABUSE

IN IRISH & EUROPEAN HORSE INDUSTRIES

A new RTÉ Investigates series sheds light on the dark side of the Irish and European horse industries. Using hidden cameras, the investigation uncovers the abuse horses face once they are no longer valuable for racing or other equine activities.

Horses hold a significant place in Irish culture, but when they are deemed no longer useful, THOUSANDS are sent to slaughter or traded across Europe under new identities.

Included in the documentary is footage that appeared to show one man putting new microchips in horses’ necks to change their identity, presumably to ‘clean’ them up for human consumption in Europe.

The RTÉ’s investigation highlights systemic flaws in horse traceability, revealing how thousands of thoroughbred racehorses, some of which earned over €1.5 million, end up in Ireland’s only licensed horse abattoir.

This lack of proper tracking raises serious concerns about the safety of the human food chain, prompting investigations across Europe.

The documentary reveals distressing footage of horse abuse at slaughterhouses, shocking experts like Professor Christopher Elliot of Queen’s University Belfast, who described the scenes as unprecedented in his 45 years of experience.

The investigation aims to expose the consequences of breeding thousands of horses annually to support industries like racing, which receives €76 million in state support, and the grim fate many horses face once they are no longer profitable.
