A good news story from November 2019.

My name is Clay.

I was sent to Echuca horse sale last week (11/2019). I am only 4 years old. I am registered, but did that make a difference? No. At the sale yard they said I was quiet. They patted me all over and picked up all my feet with no problems at all. Did that make a difference? No. I was advertised as having been backed and ready for the next step, that it was a regretful sale. Did that make a difference? No.
They said I was ready to be finished off. How ironic seeing that I ended up on the dreaded truck. I’m sure they didn’t want me to be finished off in that way or expect me to end up on the truck, but why did they send me to the sale? Why didn’t they put a reserve on me. Why didn’t they care who bought me? Why didn’t they know that there is a strong chance of me ending up doomed to a horror trip from Victoria to the infamous abattoir in Qld?
I am not a racehorse, so there won’t be the same uproar as there has been about the thoroughbreds. But there should be, because my life is every bit as important as any other horse and my fear and confusion every bit as real.
*Please note that this photo of Clay on the truck was on his way to Shepp Meats at Mooroopna. Was he saved from going on the truck to Qld? Did someone buy him before he was forced back on the truck for “the trip”? I don’t know. Even if (and it’s a big if) Clay was saved, every other horse on that truck had a story too and not one of them deserved that fate. PS: Clay was sold for $300. A meat buyer can make over $600 on his body. PSS: The original owner did thankfully buy him back.
