In October 2019, Australians were horrified to see The Final Race on the 7.30 Report (scroll down). It showed in graphic detail the fate of unwanted horses in Australia. It particularly focussed on the large amount of racehorses that were being disposed of with the barbaric slaughter methods at Meramist, the abattoir that slaughters our horses for human consumption and export to Europe and Japan.
We saw the fear, the absolute terror of horses that were accustomed to seeing people as their comfort, as their nurturers and carers, that found themselves in a place of inconceivable torture with people that abused them, electrocuted them and ultimately cut their throats open. Horses were actually watching other horses die.
Australians wanted the racing industry held to account, and multiple investigations were announced. The Racing Industry promised change. The Martin Inquiry delivered 55 recommendations which were accepted by the Queensland Government.

#MOHM NEEDS YOUR HELP!
We’ve been threatened by those in the horse racing industry and those who benefit from horse slaughter more times than we can count.
But we are not going away.
We are going to persist until horse slaughter no longer exists for any purpose within Australia -- and until the horse racing industry makes drastic changes.
We are going to continue our hands-on work to offer lifelong sanctuary to as many horses as possible. We generally have 20 at just one of our locations - at any given time.
We have the acreage to take on more horses as financial support allows.
