MAJOR HORSE RACING EXPOSE
USA: November 2023 — 60 Minutes
“The Justice Department winds down one of the biggest horse doping investigations in U.S. history, Cecilia Vega examines the wiretaps that helped solve the case and convict dozens of veterinarians, horse trainers and drug distributors.”
“A horse racing watchdog is trying to clean up the sport, which for years has grappled with drugs and cheating. Then, multiple horse deaths since last spring have added to questions about the sport’s future.”
HORSE RACING IN AUSTRALIA IS NOT ANY BETTER
As usual, the big bosses of horse racing want the little people to complain and defend racing even when outside pressure has to be brought to bear when racing authorities are not doing their job.
Racing gets brought into disrepute and the social licence is threatened by people taking advantage of the system and cheating, despite the racing authorities not stopping this, the racing industry is encouraging those involved with racing to complain to CBS 60 Minutes…
In Australia it is no different, the racing people who do the right thing by horses are expected to defend racing while activists are drawing attention to the horrors of racing.
MOHM knows that the horse racing and breeding industry needs a big overhaul and we are joining the fight to raise awareness.
Gambling is embedded in the entire system.
It’s not just the average punter who is gambling.
Owners buy a horse and they hope to get a winner – that’s a gamble.
Breeders overbreed horses hoping to get big prices at the yearling sales, again a gamble.
The system is known as the CHURN model because one is encouraged to keep trying.
The horse racing system encourages a high turnover of horses. Owners are enticed by the prospect of large purses to discard horses and replace them.
Did you know that horses are referred to as “wastage” in the horse racing industry?
There is no way that the thousands of horses bred and born each year for the racing industry in Australia can be re-homed and retrained if they don’t make it to the track or after a racing career.
On top of that, at the moment people are asking how the 1.5% of prize money — that is meant to be set aside and used to support horses as they are retired from the track — is actually being spent.
EXPOSING THE CRUELTIES OF HORSE RACING
We’ve archived just a few of the many articles in the Australian press featuring the corruption, drugs and animal abuse of the horse racing industry in Australia here and here.
#MOHM THREATENED?
We’ve been threatened by those in the horse racing industry and those who benefit from horse slaughter more times than we can count.
But we are not going away.
We are going to persist until horse slaughter no longer exists for any purpose within Australia -- and until the horse racing industry makes drastic changes.
We are going to continue our hands-on work to offer lifelong sanctuary to as many horses as possible. We generally have 20 at just one of our locations - at any given time.
We have the acreage to take on more horses as financial support allows.
