BROODMARES

The Thoroughbred industry breeds mares until they can’t produce a foal anymore and then they get sent to a knackery to be slaughtered for their meat.

If one looks on Inglis Digital one can select Brood Mares and see the results, the majority get “passed in”.

Owners have to pay $385 to list a horse that way – we’d like to know if that is a tax write-off.

What happens to all the mares who get “passed in”?

It is not an accident that there is a knackery right on the doorstep of the Hunter Valley, the epicentre of TB breeding in Australia.

That’s where the studs send old brood mares.

We can’t understand why studs don’t use aftercare as a marketing point.

We have been to a few studs in the Hunter Valley and at one stud the manager said that the brood mares all die at 16 because they get laminitis from standing around a lot.  (AND he was NOT ashamed of that.) The other stud we visited said the mares all live until 22 and they are out the back.

WE DON’T BELIEVE EITHER OF THEM

They send them to the knackery after they can’t produce any more foals.

And the number in the article is just ridiculous. Most people know that statistics can be used to distort the truth. Therefore they quote the AVERAGE brood mare prices. The median is far more accurate in conveying information. Of course when they have one mare selling for over a million and the rest sell for $600 the average is going to be high.

ACTUAL STATS FROM INGLIS DIGITAL SEPT. LATE 2024

There were 306 entries.

Total brood mares 51 minus 6 cancelled/withdrawn

22 had no bids so were passed in — of these 3 were pregnant

11 were under $1000

8 were under $12,000

5 were over $12,000

Autumn Angel sold at a special Inglis Digital sale for over 1,225,000 million. That amount is going to distort the average.

In Inglis digital in September sales, 58% of brood mares sold, the rest are passed in.

They are more likely to sell if they are pregnant. And as it says in the article, buyers are purchasing the contents of the stomach and then the mare is in trouble.

We saw a broodmare sold at the MM with a foal at foot, When the foal was weaned, the mare was dumped at a rescue. And it was interesting to see they paid more for the mare than they got for the foal. Damn!

#MOHM NEEDS YOUR HELP!

We’ve been threatened by those in the horse racing industry and those who benefit from horse slaughter more times than we can count.

But we are not going away.

We are going to persist until horse slaughter no longer exists for any purpose within Australia -- and until the horse racing industry makes drastic changes.

We are going to continue our hands-on work to offer lifelong sanctuary to as many horses as possible.  We generally have 20 at just one of our locations - at any given time.

We have the acreage to take on more horses as financial support allows.

You do NOT need a PayPal account to contribute.
