TRANSPORT LAWS BLATANTLY BROKEN
After ABC NEWS 7:30 aired the Final Race and exposed just how cruel the slaughter of horses at the Meramist abattoir is, a government inquiry investigated Meramist and Biosecurity QLD’s handling of welfare incidents.
The report stated: “transporters operate with impunity”.
The Transport Standard (laws) CLEARLY state
a horse who is blind in both eyes cannot be transported.
Chloe’s case shows that nothing has changed since the airing of “The Final Race” and the “Martin Inquiry“.
Chloe, a blind mare ended up at the “doggers” in Gympie. There she was separated from a Standardbred who had been her eyes, a Standardbred gelding who helped her navigate and stay calm.
Once separated from her geliding friend she was terrified and hysterical. She was then loaded on a truck with strange horses and subsequently attacked by other horses enroute to the abattoir for slaughter. AGAIN, keep in mind that Transport Standards clearly state that horses who are blind are NOT to be transported.
We have evidence that those loading her knew she was blind.
Once at Meramist she was NOT humanely euthanized, she was NOT given a kind kill, instead she was dragged onto the kill floor and given a “priority kill” which simply means she was slaughtered before others, and didn’t have to be run through and tormented further by other horses or workers.
Again, the “doggers” who loaded Chloe and hauled her to her death knew she was blind, and after she was slaughtered her eye balls were extracted and examined by a vet who verified that she was blind in both eyes.
Yet, no charges have been laid against Ty Cummings who sent her to slaughter, or against Peter Klan on whose behalf she was sent to slaughter.
AGAIN, Chloe’s case shows that nothing has changed since the airing of “The Final Race” and the “Martin Inquiry“.
#MOHM THREATENED?
We’ve been threatened by those in the horse racing industry and those who benefit from horse slaughter more times than we can count.
But we are not going away.
We are going to persist until horse slaughter no longer exists for any purpose within Australia -- and until the horse racing industry makes drastic changes.
We are going to continue our hands-on work to offer lifelong sanctuary to as many horses as possible. We generally have 20 at just one of our locations - at any given time.
We have the acreage to take on more horses as financial support allows.
