Yes we have Standards for the land transport of horses in Australia but they are not worth the paper they are written on, as the saying goes.

There is no one policing the standards so horses can be on a truck without food and water for days and no one would know.

Horses can be on a truck legally for 24 hours, with a few exceptions for foals and pregnant mares. This means they are not rested, fed or watered in this time.

There is a petition here to change the standards.

Horses can fall down and get trampled to death. Here is the story of 2 thoroughbreds on a truck from Victoria to Meramist abattoir in Queensland.

One had been dead on the truck for over 24 hours and the other had a broken fetlock and was shot after arrival.

Imagine the horror of the other 35 horses that had to travel with this poor boy.

It is not clear what he died from however the vet report from Meramist mentions a significant degree of decomposition.

The documents have been examined by American forensic pathologists who state that the horse had been dead over 24 hours.

This is a clear violation of the Land Transport Standards because he had clearly been on the truck in excess of 24 hours.

This poor mare with an open dislocated fetlock managed to stay upright and was shot by the stockman after leaving the truck.
This is the Horse Vendor Declaration saying that the 34 horses that made it to the slaughter floor had not been in contact with a dead horse.

We have a film about these horses. Dead on Arrival and there are also versions that have Italian and German subtitles.

It is important that European consumers of horse meat know the suffering of horses that end up on their plate.

Please share.
