ANOTHER MYTH BUSTED
You may have been led to believe that grey horses (sometimes referred to as white horses) do not go to slaughter for human consumption.
Sadly, that is not true. Horses of every colour, size, breed and age are slaughtered in Australia for human consumption
Sadly we see videos and pictures of horses at the Meramist Abattoir so we know that they do accept grey (white) horses.
HOW DID THIS MYTH COME TO BE?
Most melanomas found in horses occur in those with gray coats, in which the coat turns gray (or white) with age. They are especially common in Lipizzaners, Arabians, and Percherons. It has been found that up to 80% of gray or white horses of these breeds may be affected.
GREY HORSES ARE ACCEPTED & SLAUGHTERED
With as many as 80 percent of grey horses having melanomas (cancer), you might think that common sense would dictate that grey horses should be exempt from being slaughtered.
But that is NOT the case – again they are slaughtered.

Jul 15, 2019 — all grey or white horses must be inspected for melanosis and melanoma by examination of the muscles and lymph nodes. (This means carcasses are supposed to be inspected.)
Regulations may be found here but please be warned there are images that are considered triggering.
