Whips have long been a staple in equestrian disciplines — racing, dressage, eventing, show jumping, and beyond.
Supporters call them “aids.”
Critics, and now increasingly the science, call them what they truly are: instruments of fear and pain.
Whether a whip is used to “motivate” a horse to run faster, jump higher, or obey quicker…
The core truth remains the same: horses are struck to make them comply.
And yet, we’re told they love their jobs.
That racehorses love to run.
That elite dressage horses love to perform.
If that were true — if they wanted to do these things — why are they being hit?
A HORSE FEELS A FLY LAND & YET SOME THINK IT IS OKAY TO HIT THEM?
They can detect subtle shifts in a rider’s weight or the twitch of a rein.
They do not need to be whipped to understand what is being asked of them.
So when a whip lashes across their flanks whether during training for any purpose or during a race, they feel it all — the sting, the pressure, the pain, and often, the fear.
What’s worse?
Many horses are whipped not because they’re resisting, but even when they are already doing what they’re asked to do — running, jumping, moving forward.
This isn’t training. It’s punishment.
And it’s legal in nearly every equestrian sport.
IT’S TIME TO ASK THE HARD QUESTIONS
If whipping didn’t hurt, why would it work?
If horses are willing partners, why do we need to inflict pain to make them perform?
If equestrian sport claims to be about harmony and trust, why is violence still allowed?
The answer is simple: because the welfare of horses is too often sacrificed for performance, prestige, and profit.
RSPCA OPPOSES WHIP USE & CALLS FOR BAN OF WHIP
The RSPCA says whips should be banned in Australian racing and has lobbied for years for the trial of races where the whip cannot be used for performance-enhancing purposes.
Read more including a study that compared 126 “whipping-permitted” and “whipping-free” races in the UK and found no difference in movement on course, interference on course, incidents related to jockey behaviour, or race finishing times.
