BACK YARD BREEDERS OFTEN BLAMED

Time and again we hear those who support horse racing and those directly involved in the industry claim that backyard breeders are to blame for the large number of horses slaughtered annually in Australia.

This claim is used not just by the horse racing industry in Australia but also in other parts of the world.

We agree that backyard breeders do play a part — but we want to make sure that those involved with horse racing don’t get away with blaming others.

HERE’S JUST ONE EXAMPLE…

Saturday, September 14, 2024, is set to be an interesting day in racing, as the prestigious Makybe Diva Stakes takes place at Flemington.

But let’s face reality, there is a very dirty underbelly to the horse racing industry, not just in Australia but worldwide.

Originally named in 2007 after the legendary mare, this Group 1 race honours the only mare to win the Melbourne Cup three times—a feat no other mare has ever accomplished.

Makybe Diva earned over $14 million during her remarkable career, cementing her place in racing history.

Her dam, Tugela, also left a lasting legacy, producing two additional stakes winners.

According to the Stud Book, Tugela has been responsible for 109 horses over four generations, though not all of them have been registered yet.

Breeding horses has largely become a luxury pursuit for the ultra-wealthy, with some of the biggest studs offering private airstrips to accommodate clients arriving in personal planes.

It’s a high-stakes gamble, driven by the dream of producing the next Makybe Diva or Black Caviar.

However, for every champion, countless horses don’t live up to expectations.

These “wastage” horses most often face a grim fate, with many discarded and sent to be slaughtered when they fail to deliver on their potential.

Australia is home to around 20,000 broodmares, and while backyard breeders are frequently blamed for the issue of overbreeding, the story of Tugela suggests otherwise. The industry’s focus on producing the next superstar often overlooks the welfare of the horses that don’t make the cut, highlighting the darker side of thoroughbred breeding.

Yes, the horse racing industry refers to horses as “wastage“.

Please join us in raising awareness about the dirty underbelly of racing and boycotting horse racing.  Together we can make a difference.
