There are 2 main issues with Australian horse meat:

  1. Cruelty and inhumane slaughter

  2. Food safety

Knackeries and Abattoirs: the difference

Knackeries and abattoirs are not the same.

Knackeries produce pet food, dog baits and other by-products. Australia has about 30 knackeries that are multi-species. Horses are shot at knackeries, whereas at abattoirs, a penetrative captive bolt is used. Horses slaughtered at abattoirs are for human consumption, which supposedly has higher standards of welfare and food safety than knackeries.

Australia has 2 abattoirs that slaughter for human consumption. These 2 abattoirs have an EU licence so the meat can be exported to the European Union. The Peterborough abattoir in South Australia is currently not killing horses.

Meramist abattoir is just north of Brisbane, in Caboolture, Queensland. Our focus is on this abattoir as they kill around 10,000 horses a year. The doggers mentioned on here supply this abattoir.

There is also a butcher in Western Australia that slaughters horses for Australian restaurants.

Meramist Abattoir, Caboolture, Queensland

Meramist is a multi-species abattoir that kills cattle, horses and until recently, camels. It falls under the Belgian parent company, Multimeat.

The owners of Meramist are Belgians, Luc Nauwelaers, his sister, Marie-Christine Nauwelaers and New Zealander, manager of Meramist, Mike Eathorne.

Mike Eathorne, the manager at the Meramist Abattoir (slaughterhouse) likes to laugh at people who show concern for horses with his favourite line being:

“They’re already in the chiller and they only get to leave here in a cardboard box!”

Meramist abattoir made headlines around the world in 2019 and 2020.

Meramist sponsor horse races, what a sick joke!

Whistleblowers are invited to contact MOHM regarding violations occurring during horse slaughter or transport to slaughter.  Are you an ex-slaughterhouse employee, a transport driver or a feedlot operator with knowledge of animal abuse, or other violations?  Are you a track veterinarian who has evidence of horses “run” on phenylbutazone or other drugs, and then being shipped to slaughter?  Do you have pictures/video of horses in transit to slaughter?

Anonymity guaranteed!
