MISINFORMATION ABOUT BRUMBIES

Currently, misinformation about Brumbies in the KNP is running rampant.  There is also misinformation about damage and the threat to wildlife.

Equine scientists have shown many threatened species are NOT under threat from horses. Ph.D. candidates have used very dubious methods to photograph damage supposedly caused by Brumbies.

Most Brumbies live in the North Kosciuszko area and many surveys of numbers were conducted — then ONE ‘researcher’ got an impossible increase — followed by demands Brumbies be shot.

As a result of mass culling via shooting, horses suffer inhumane deaths.

See a recent blog post here where foals were aborted due to the stress of mass culling  then in some cases eaten by predators while still alive.

Foals who survive are left to fend for themselves and may starve as a result.  

In addition, horses, including heavily pregnant mares and their foals have died slowly over days because shots were not clean, they were not killed instantly.  Can you imagine that panic by the whole herd when shots are fired and how difficult it is to get off accurate shots?

This graph shows a claim that the number of Brumbies has increased drastically over a 10-year period.

A 41% increase is impossible because Brumbies only produce a foal every second year.  Additionally, Brumby numbers are reduced by bushfires and removals, which is another reason a 41% increase is impossible.

The author of these absurd figures is not only harming Brumbies who are dying after being shot and injured and left to die over days with their bodies scavenged and ripped apart by pigs and dogs — he has also done a great disservice to science because most people trust science.

Now the number of conspiracy theories is challenging our faith in science and false data will do further damage to science.

Perhaps our task is to harmonise ourselves with these old and new environments, not continually attempt to “manage” them into some other state that we in our hubris think is more desirable, whether ecologically, economically or culturally.
