YOU WIN SOME – YOU LOSE MORE
When Peta Murphy chaired the parliamentary inquiry into gambling, she called it what it is: a public health crisis.
The late MP warned that gambling was destroying lives at a scale few Australians truly understand.
Her report titled, ‘You win some, you lose more‘ was clear: gambling companies exploit addiction, children are being groomed through sports advertising, and the only solution is bold reform—total advertising bans, stronger identity checks, and an independent regulator.
THE NUMBERS ARE STAGGERING
The report contained 31 recommendations to protect families and children.
But years later, nothing has changed.
Peta sadly lost her battle with cancer and her hard work has been shelved.
And every day of government inaction means more lives shattered.
- 73% of Australian adults gamble each year.
38% gamble every week. - Nearly half of gamblers are at risk of harm.
- Pokies drain $13 billion a year, mostly from people already vulnerable.
THE AMA IS SPEAKING OUT
And now, even doctors are raising the alarm with a June 28, 2025 media release titled: Two years of government inaction leaves Australians exposed to gambling harm.
The Australian Medical Association (AMA)—the peak body for doctors—has issued a damning warning.
Gambling, the AMA states, drives mental health crises, substance abuse, family breakdown, and financial ruin.
AMA President Dr Danielle McMullen has condemned the government’s two years of inaction, calling it “unacceptable” and “a betrayal of families.”
CALL TO ACTION
Every bet fuels cruelty.
Every wager is another step toward addiction and despair.
The gambling industry and horse racing are joined at the hip—one cannot exist without the other.
Say no to horse racing, no to gambling, no to the resulting cruelty.

#MOHM THREATENED?
We’ve been threatened by those in the horse racing industry and those who benefit from horse slaughter more times than we can count.
But we are not going away.
We are going to persist until horse slaughter no longer exists for any purpose within Australia -- and until the horse racing industry makes drastic changes.
We are going to continue our hands-on work to offer lifelong sanctuary to as many horses as possible. We generally have 20 at just one of our locations - at any given time.
We have the acreage to take on more horses as financial support allows.
FINALLY 4 YEARS LATER AN INQUEST
MARINA MORELEDITOR'S NOTE: In 2022, we documented the fatal fall of jockey Marina Morel and the unanswered questions that followed. FOUR Years later, a coronial inquest (March 16th - 20th, 2026) will now examine those circumstances. We will share the location when it...
