CHAMPION TRAINER CHRIS WALLER SPEAKS OUT…
Horse racing likes to dress itself up as “the sport of kings,” but the truth is far uglier.
At its core, racing is not about horses, trainers, or even punters—it’s about gambling turnover.
The animals who actually put their lives on the line are the least important participants in the entire system.
The recent Winx Stakes at Randwick (August 23, 2025) exposed this reality in brutal fashion.
Sydney had been battered by relentless rain—over 200mm fell in the week leading up to the race.
Even champion trainer Chris Waller, one of the most powerful figures in Australian racing, admitted the track was dangerously wet and that the meeting should not have gone ahead.
His own words tell the story:
“I don’t think they should be running today. I think it’s too wet…
Racing’s not a roulette wheel but that’s how we seem to be treating racing at the moment.
But we’ve got such great prize money and it’s got to come from somewhere and that is wagering and unfortunately the betting turnover drops off Sundays and Mondays so apparently it would have been unfinancial to run (the meeting) on those days.
It’s a shame to have to send those horses out (today). Whinge over.”
GAMBLING, NOT HORSES DECIDE WHEN RACES ARE RUN
Let’s pause on that.
Waller is effectively saying that horses had to be risked on a dangerous track because rescheduling would have hurt betting profits.
Not horse welfare.
Not safety.
Not common sense.
Gambling turnover.
THE HORSES ARE NOT THE PRIORITY
This statement by Waller makes one thing crystal clear…
The bookmakers and punters come first.
The horses, who have no choice in the matter, come last.
And unlike human athletes, who can refuse to compete if the conditions are unsafe, horses are given no such freedom. They are forced onto the track regardless of the risks.
A CATALYST FOR CHANGE OR JUST MORE OF THE SAME?
If a champion trainer openly admits that gambling in Australia dictates whether a race runs—regardless of the track conditions—then we cannot pretend horse welfare is at the heart of racing. It isn’t.
THE BOTTOM LINE…
The Winx Stakes should never have gone ahead.
Horses were forced to run on unsafe ground not because it was good for them, but because it was good for betting turnover.
That is the reality of horse racing in Australia: gambling first, horses last.
