THE BIG PICTURE
Obviously – or maybe we should say hopefully you know that horses die on the track on a very regular basis.
"The Melbourne Cup, for reasons no one can entirely explain, has become Australia’s deadliest race."
- Sydney Morning Herald
Like many others there was a time when we loved to watch horse racing, we loved to go to the track and watch the big races on TV – after all thoroughbreds and standardbreds are spectacular.
But as we witnessed more and more deaths at the track and then we started to learn more about an industry that refers to horses as “wastage” our love of racing was replaced with concern for horses.
Yes really, the horse racing industry refers to horses who age out, are injured or don’t have what it takes to make it to the track or be successful at the track as wastage – again our love of horse racing suddenly turned to concern for horses.
In July 2018, on the ABC Four Corners programme “Off Track”, Dr Bidda Jones Chief Scientist of RSPCA Australia stated that 8,500 horses exited the thoroughbred horse racing industry every year…
Where do they end up? A small percentage are re-homed but many, if not most end up slaughtered for dog food – or even human consumption.
We know that many trainers send these horses – horses considered “wastage” directly to doggers. Some explicitly instruct the dogger to kill the horse and that they are NOT to be re-homed.
We’ve become so passionate about protecting horses from the dangers of horse racing that we have a special section on our website here where we’ve documented just a few of the horrors of horse racing in Australia. We think this site is also deserving of your attention.
P.S. Congratulations horse advocates.
The racing industry in Australia is doing its best to come after us on social media which tells us YOUR advocacy is working.
As you will see as you scroll through this page — we’ve documented more than a few cases proving that horse racing is NOT the sport of kings. Need more proof? Check out this site.

#MOHM THREATENED?
We’ve been threatened by those in the horse racing industry and those who benefit from horse slaughter more times than we can count.
But we are not going away.
We are going to persist until horse slaughter no longer exists for any purpose within Australia -- and until the horse racing industry makes drastic changes.
We are going to continue our hands-on work to offer lifelong sanctuary to as many horses as possible. We generally have 20 at just one of our locations - at any given time.
We have the acreage to take on more horses as financial support allows.
