MEET OUR HORSE MEAT
LEARN ABOUT THE GREEDY HORSE-KILLING TRADE FOR HUMAN & PET CONSUMPTION & HOW YOU CAN HELP HORSES ESCAPE THIS VICIOUS FATE DONATEWHY THE NAME “MEET OUR HORSE MEAT”?
Yes — the name is confronting.
That’s the point.
We’re NOT here to promote horse meat.
We’re here to expose it — and the industries that profit from it.
OUR MISSION: END HORSE SLAUGHTER IN AUSTRALIA
Meet Our Horse Meat began with one clear goal:
To end the slaughter of horses in Australia — including the slaughter of Brumbies — whether for human consumption, pet food, or the greyhound racing industry.
BUT we discovered so much more…
THE HIDDEN LINK:
HORSE RACING & SLAUGHTER
Digging deeper, we found many shocking truths:
We uncovered the little known ties between horse slaughter and horse racing — an industry that brands itself as sport, but functions as a pipeline of exploitation and horror.
Horse racing isn’t a sport — it’s a spectacle of abuse.
What started as a fight against the inhumane slaughtering of horses and exporting of toxic horse meat has evolved into a mission to confront systemic cruelty, wherever it hides.
AUSTRALIA SLAUGHTERS HORSES NOT RAISED FOR MEAT
Horses bred for the racetrack often end up slaughtered for their meat.
While many horses sent to slaughter are former racehorses the industry calls “wastage.” — they’re not the only horses slaughtered.
Horses slaughtered in Australia include:
- Show horses
- Riding school horses
- Family pets
- Rodeo ‘stock’
- Brumbies — wild horses are massacred en masse
They’re not food. They’re victims of a system that treats them as disposable.
FROM AUSTRALIA TO EUROPE – WITHOUT THE TRUTH
Until recently, thousands of pounds of toxic horse meat were exported overseas — mainly to the EU — often without consumers knowing the risks.
That export has paused, but the killing hasn’t stopped.
HORSE SLAUGHTER IS LEGAL & HAPPENING
More than 30 knackeries across Australia continue to slaughter horses — often for pet food, including to feed racing greyhounds in yet another exploitive industry.
And in Kosciuszko National Park, the government has sanctioned the mass shooting of Brumbies — a cruel and inhumane campaign.
COULD YOU BE EATING HORSE MEAT WITHOUT KNOWING SO?
Are you feeding horse meat to your dogs or other pets?
If so you’ll want to pay special attention to the lack of testing of horse meat for toxic substances. Remember, horses slaughtered in Australia are not specifically bred to be used as meat.
AND everyone, no matter if they are feeding their pets horse meat or not should be aware that as long as horses are slaughtered in Australia for any purpose the ‘opportunity’ for it to end up in the human food chain exists.
Don’t think it could happen here? With rising food prices food fraud is an ever increasing threat. There have been cases in the USA, in Canada and the European Union of horse meat being marked and sold as other than horse meat.
WE WOULDN’T EAT CATS OR DOGS – WHY TOLERATE THIS?
So why do we accept the cruelty when it happens to horses?
WE’VE SEEN THE SUFFERING UP CLOSE
- Horses dumped at auctions
- Horses hauled for 30 hours straight
- No water, no rest
- Trapped in overheated metal trailers
- Eyes wide with fear
- Bodies shutting down
- Herded into yards not for care — but for a brutal death
When the journey ends, the cruelty doesn’t.

THIS IS NOT HUMANE EUTHANASIA
Let’s be clear:
- This is not humane.
- This is not euthanasia.
- This is not necessary
- This is not acceptable.
At Meet Our Horse Meat, we’re here to expose the truth, break the silence, and fight for every horse — domestic or wild — caught in this system of cruelty.
INDUSTRY LIES VS. BRUTAL REALITY
Slaughterhouses claim to follow humane practices.
But undercover footage tells a different story.
In the ABC’s 7.30 Report — The Final Race — cameras captured horses at Meramist abattoir:
- The captive bolt gun failing to render them unconscious
- Horses strung up by one leg, still alive as their throats were cut
Young or old. Pregnant mares. Horses who have won $100K or more. The slaughter industry does not discriminate.
The majority of horses slaughtered in Australia had positive interactions with people and developed an understanding of humans as care givers and providers.
The majority sought help from fear and pain from humans, and now at their demise, they realize that these humans do not care about them and are about to kill them. Try as they might, there is no escape.
IT’S TIME TO DRAW THE LINE…
No horse should suffer for convenience, money, or sport.

CURRENTLY TRENDING
Undercover investigations in Australia have shown the horrendous animal welfare conditions in the EU-approved Meramist slaughterhouse.
We know this 2-minute video is hard to watch but we’re hoping that not everyone will turn away.
Horses are not specifically bred for meat and are not subject to the same regulations that animals bred to enter the food chain are.
We need to find a way to protect the native animals at risk, without hunting down Brumbies with helicopters, ground shooting or hauling them to be slaughtered at knackeries.
Join us in demanding humane solutions.
