THE DARK REALITY BEHIND THE GLAMOUR

Coolmore is one of the most powerful breeding operations in the world—owned by billionaire John Magnier, with studs (horse breeding operations)  in Ireland, the U.S., and Australia.

But behind the prestige lies a darker reality.

The footage in this film comes from Coolmore Ireland. It shows a stallion handler, Paul Gleeson, being rough—excessively so—with a stallion named Australia, a horse known to be gentle and compliant.

At Coolmore, stallions are kept to service mares—each mating a high-stakes gamble to hopefully produce a profitable foal.

A service by Australia once cost €25,000.

In 2025, it dropped to €10,000.

Why?  Because Australia’s value is declining.

And once his earning power diminishes further, what happens to him?

Some stallions are buried with dignity. But others, especially in Australia, are quietly trucked off to slaughter and considered ‘wastage‘ when they’re no longer profitable.

Even if Australia is granted a so-called “retirement,” will he still suffer? Will he be too old to geld and finally know peace?

What happens in breeding barns is hidden from public view—for a reason.

Plain and simply put, it’s cruel.

For example…

At Coolmore, it appears that every mare is restrained with a twitch—a rope twisted around the soft tissue of the nose—to prevent her from resisting a stallion she’s never met. This often happens during what is referred to as ‘foal heat’ – her first ‘cycle’ after giving birth.

In Australia, the newborn foal is sometimes locked in a pen nearby, forced to watch his mother struggling to not be mounted by a stallion.

THIS IS NOT FREEDOM.  THIS IS NOT NATURAL.

Stallions in these facilities live in isolation—locked in boxes or small yards, denied social interaction, denied choice. Their only contact with another horse is when they’re expected to mount a mare.

THIS IS NOTHING LIKE IN THE WILD.

Racing industry apologists often justify slaughter. “Better that they’re killed than left unwanted,” they say. (The same logic is used to justify the culling of brumbies.)

But wild stallions don’t “rape” mares. Wild mares don’t foal every year. That’s a myth—repeated to excuse cruelty.

Wild stallions form lasting bonds with their herds. When a mare comes into season, the stallion courts her for days. Consent, connection, and rhythm—not force.

And wild mares? Experts on Australia’s brumbies confirm that many only foal every second year—completely contradicting the exaggerated population claims used to promote mass killings – NOT as frequently as broodmares in the racing industry are bred.

OPPOSED TO CRUELTY.  OPPOSED TO SLAUGHTER.

EXPOSING THE TRUTH BEHIND THE GLAMOUR.

At Meet Our Horse Meat, we’re not just raising our voices — we’re rolling up our sleeves.

Every day, we expose cruelty, challenge powerful industries, and speak out for the horses who can’t speak for themselves. But our work doesn’t stop at advocacy. We also provide support for horses in crisis — those who’ve been abused, neglected, or were one step away from the slaughterhouse.

Your donations helps us:

Campaign for stronger animal welfare laws

Hold abusers accountable

Rescue and care for at-risk horses

Educate the public and shift cultural norms around equine treatment.

If you’re outraged by horse slaughter… If you believe in compassion over cruelty… Please donate today.

Your support saves lives — and strengthens our fight for a world where horses are treated with compassion.

Because silence isn’t an option.

Because justice needs fuel.

Because horses deserve better.

#MOHM THREATENED?

We’ve been threatened by those in the horse racing industry and those who benefit from horse slaughter more times than we can count.

But we are not going away.

We are going to persist until horse slaughter no longer exists for any purpose within Australia -- and until the horse racing industry makes drastic changes.

We are going to continue our hands-on work to offer lifelong sanctuary to as many horses as possible.  We generally have 20 at just one of our locations - at any given time.

We have the acreage to take on more horses as financial support allows.

You do NOT need a PayPal account to contribute.
