JOIN US IN SAYING #NUPTOTHECUP

As the Melbourne Cup approaches on Tuesday, November 4th, 2025, Australia prepares once again for “the race that stops a nation.”

But for those who love horses, this day has become a painful reminder of the lives lost, the injuries sustained, and the thousands of horses discarded once their racing days are over.

This year, we invite you to opt out of the spectacle and stand up for compassion. Join the growing movement saying #NupToTheCup.

“The Melbourne Cup, for reasons no one can entirely explain, has become Australia’s deadliest race.”

– Sydney Morning Herald

WHO ARE #NUPTOTHECUP?

#NupToTheCup is an initiative founded by the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses (CPR) — an Australian advocacy organization working to expose and end cruelty within the racing industry.

The #nuptothecup campaign invites people to boycott racing events like the Melbourne Cup and instead celebrate in cruelty-free ways — from garden parties and vegan lunches to community picnics and fundraising events for rescued horses.

The #nuptothecup mission is simple: Choose kindness over cruelty.

Come join us as we say Nup to the Cup!

Hosting or joining a Nup to the Cup event is for those who don’t want to support animal cruelty — but still like to have fun.

WHO IS THE COALITION FOR THE PROTECTION OF RACEHORSES?

Founded in 2008, the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses (CPR) exists because “the welfare of racehorses is not being protected by those who profit from them.”

Through investigations, campaigns, and public awareness, CPR exposes:

The systematic killing of unwanted racehorses — what the horse racing industry calls “wastage.”

Dangerous practices like jumps racing, tongue-ties, whips, and overbreeding.

The industry’s failure to provide lifetime care for the animals it breeds.

The Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses’ stance is clear:

Horseracing cannot be made kind — only ended.

#MOHM SHARES A SIMILAR MISSION

At Meet Our Horse Meat, we share a similar heartbeat as CPR — a commitment to ending the exploitation of horses, whether in slaughterhouses or on racetracks.

The racing industry and the slaughter pipeline are connected.

Horses are bred for profit and discarded when they can no longer perform.

Many end up sold at auction and slaughtered.

When we say “Meet Our Horse Meat” — we’re shining a light on where the industry ends — and why it must stop.

Both campaigns, Nup to the Cup and Meet Our Horse Meat, ask the same question:

Do we really want entertainment built on animal suffering?

WHY SAYING #NUPTOTHECUP MATTERS

The numbers are confronting.

A staggering number of horses die on Australian racetracks — from catastrophic injuries.

Many more disappear quietly into the slaughter pipeline after retirement.

By refusing to participate in the glamour and gambling of Cup Day, you send a powerful message:

“We see the suffering — and we will not be part of it.”

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CUP – GAMBLING HARM

The Melbourne Cup doesn’t just normalise cruelty to horses — it normalises gambling.

The Spring Racing Carnival floods our screens and social feeds with betting promotions, blurring the line between fun and addiction.

Behind the glamour, many Australians quietly struggle with financial stress, broken relationships, and mental health challenges linked to gambling.

Governments keep backing the races because of the tax revenue — but the real cost is carried by people, families, and communities.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

1️⃣ Boycott the CupDon’t place a bet, don’t watch the race, and don’t attend race-day events.

3️⃣ Support “Meet Our Horse Meat — Share our stories, donate to help us raise awareness, and advocate for an end to horse slaughter and racing cruelty.

4️⃣ Use your voice — Share our posts on social media, talk to friends, write to your elected officials, and speak up for horses who can’t.

CALL TO ACTION

This year, as the Melbourne Cup rolls around on November 5, let’s make it mean something new.

Let’s stop the race — not the nation.

Stand with us, stand with CPR, and stand with every horse who deserves a life beyond profit, pain, and performance.

 SUPPORT OUR WORK

At Meet Our Horse Meat, we place immense value on every donation we receive.

Your generosity fuels our investigations, keeps our reporting independent, and allows us to:

Expose cruelty and corruption in the horse slaughter industry.

Advocate for stronger laws and enforcement to protect horses.

Campaign for humane end-of-life solutions for all equines.

Educate the public about food fraud and animal welfare issues.

Push for transparency and accountability in racing and breeding.

Every contribution—no matter the size—helps us shine a light on what others want to keep hidden.

Together, we can end the exploitation and ensure every horse is treated with dignity.

#MOHM THREATENED?

We’ve been threatened by those in the horse racing industry and those who benefit from horse slaughter more times than we can count.

But we are not going away.

We are going to persist until horse slaughter no longer exists for any purpose within Australia -- and until the horse racing industry makes drastic changes.

We are going to continue our hands-on work to offer lifelong sanctuary to as many horses as possible.  We generally have 20 at just one of our locations - at any given time.

We have the acreage to take on more horses as financial support allows.

You do NOT need a PayPal account to contribute.
